i've been seeing a lot of pastel imposters and was wondering how you can tell the difference between the real and not so real.
On breeder websites only the super beautiful pastels are shown, what can a not so beautiful pastel look like??

    Re: Pastel or Nice Normal???

once you see one in person there is no confusing a normal w/ a pastel(even one that is not the prettiest). But the pale eyes and tongues are a trait common to pastels and is a good thing to look for. Classic jungles have pale eyes and generally lighter coloring also so look out for someone trying to pass one off as a pastel. The some of the 'lines' of pastels look completely different to me (i.e. nerd and graziani) so look around at a bunch of breeder sites. Hope that helps a bit.

    Re: Pastel or Nice Normal???

I believe pastels are also supposed to have wide (like 3 scales across) white bellies. Even then it might not always be so cut and dry. I've got a ch girl that has several of the pastel traits but I don't think is one.

    Re: Pastel or Nice Normal???

i've seen pastels in person but then i've seen normals that look like pastels.
the have blushing in their stripes and their head is really light in colour.
i dont know if its juts cuz theyre babies. the reason y im asking is because i was at PJ's pet centre and was looking at a whole bunch of baby balls and i could have sworn afew of them were pastels. but PJ's wouldnt have pastels and especially not for $150.

here is my pastel, i consider him average looking. he is a graziani line. notice the pale spots inside the dorsal markings, the high yellow look and when he was a baby he was a lot brighter and had a really faded spot on the back of his head.

    Re: Pastel or Nice Normal???

I always look for a lot of that nice blushing (that you can see above in kavmon's pic.) That and the pale eyes and tongue, of course. High gold coloration alone is not enough to convince me in a young snake, but that blushing is not something that will disappear.
