Re: Custom Cage
Good looking cage but you shouldn't be housing more than one snake per enclosure for any reason other than breeding. And since it's two males I am hoping that's not the case.

Re: Custom Cage
I use a heat lamp on one side of the cage tempeture at ground level on hot side is about 88,83 on the cool side. Both of my snakes love to climb and have a few spot where they can crawl up to the top of the cage. I have housed the 2 male balls together for 2 years and they have been living this way without a problem. i always seperate them to feed them excetra!! Why shouldn't they be kept together?

Re: Custom Cage
hey rick, im in the process of building a custom cage aswell and i was wondering what type of finish did you use and is it used on the inside aswell??
i already shellacked mine(if thats how you spell it) and i did the inside aswell, but someone told me it will kill my snake. i see tons of enclosures with it though. how long after you applied the finish did you put your snakes in? it seems fine to me so i dont know if that guy i spoke to knows what hes talking about.
thanks

Re: Custom Cage
Hey Rick here is a good link for why two "boas" shouldn't be housed together. It is tailored towards boas since it is a boa site, but applies to all snakes.
Go to the link and scroll down to the section on housing boas together. As you can see it "Can" be done but has all too many down sides. Ultimately the choice is yours and you could have no problems, but do the pro's outweight the cons?

Re: Custom Cage
I used an oil based stain followed by three coats of urethane varnish (oil based)with sanding inbetween to get a nice glassy finish. Usually i coat the inside first so by the time i get to the outside of the cage and finish it will have been curing for over a week. Urethane does not take that long to dry but why take chances. I checked out the boa housing requirements and agree that feeding time should be kept seperate. But seeing to the fact that balls are so docile( my observation)and that fact that neither snake has ever shown aggression to the other and actually seem to enjoy each others company, I have to disagree that it cannot be done sucessfully.I dont know how easy it is for balls to get sick, but i would assume with proper sanitation and care that it would be rare!!!
Last I appreciate all the nice comments about my cage, it took quite a few weekends to build but my snakes seem to love it.
I can afford another cage and currently am building a larger cage for the top of my dresser.(5' x 2' x 2) Pictures will follow shortly in another post. I will probably still house my 2 snakes together but if i have a problem I will have another cage to seperate them.
