Pvc tank gradient issue

Hi all,

So I finally got a pvc tank 2x2x1. I have a radiant heat panel 40 watts installed in the back corner, and an under tank heater in that corner as well. These are both hooked up to a herpstat 2.

Her hot spot is 90 and the ambient air in that corner is 82 but the air temp in her hide is 85. It then sharply drops! The other end of the cage by the door is 75.... I don't get how the temp can vary so much! I spent a lot on this rhp as I've heard amazing things about them. I can't believe in such a small cage there is such a sharp gradient.

I'm wondering if it's because of this odd gap in the pvc tank door, no idea what company it is but I'm disappointed lol.

If your room temps are a lot lower it could be leaking into the enclosure. I put my panel opposite side of my hot side (90) and just keep ambient temp in the enclosure in the 80's. been working out for me . could try and block some of the air vents if you have a lot of them.

I switched the panel to the other side away from the heat tape and it helped but the cool side is still too cool! And I can't raise the temp or the hot side will be too hot. If I close a vent it be on the hot side so that won't help.

Any other ideas? I guess not much I can do given the room temp.

That's pretty normal, all my cages read low to mid 70's right by the door but the snakes never hang out there. As long as it's warm enough on the hot hide which sounds good and the cool side hide is higher 70's low 80's your snake will be ok. I have boaphile cages which might be what yours is and they vent around the doors like that. Or move the heat panel to the middle instead of one side.

A 40 watt heat panel might not be the right size, especially if the ambient temps in the room get low. That gap between the glass and cage is pretty big too, I would find a way to close that up. Try repositioning the glass piece and re mount it to see if it lines up better.

Please keep us updated on your progress...as someone who has finally ordered a pvc cage of my own, it is difficult to sift through the pages and pages of info on setting up a rhp gradient. This is an important thread for a lot of us newbies and it would be nice to have some more information easily available.

I think that some duct or even electrical tape should close that gap easily.
