size of prey
This is Katie, my 2 year old coppernose beagle.
These are all 6 of her babies.
This is the one we are thinking about keeping- I have been watching each and everyone of these babies for the right one since my hubby would like to keep one. I like this one cause even at just over 2 weeks, she has a heck of a nose like her mama (good for hunting) and she is very playful and the most outgoing, the rest are rather nice pups, just very lazy and not very interactive with the world around them.

Is she purebred Beagle? And wow! 6 girls, that's pretty good Are you going to get her spayed after this litter or let her have more? That puppy you're keeping is adorable, nice markings too. I like the tri-colored ones. Are you planning on breeding the puppy when she's old enough? If not, (this is my opinion as a vet tech student) I would spay her because there are so many things that could happen to intact dogs. One being pyometra, and it's not fun.
But anyway, they are cute, and Beagles are great family dogs, and hunting dogs

They're cute, even though these aren't quite the puppies you wanted

Katie is definately pure bred. Her pups are another story- after twisting my daughters arm (not literally), she admitted to taking Katie down the road when she was in heat and letting her get pregnant by a neighbors coppernose cause she wanted puppies! But, a week later, Katie was tied out for a bit, and a neighbor who lets thier dogs run, let out thier mutt, and so- apparently, we have 2 litters in one. I was reading in my book on beagles, and talked to the breeder I got Katie from 2 years ago, that they can be pregnant by several males, thus- resulting in multi-fathered/multi litters being born at one time. So, out of 6- we have 4 lookin like pure beagle, 2 are coppernose, 2 are tri- but one of them I am thinkin may actually end up as a blue tick. The other 2 pups, one is white- with a few tan lookin markings, and the other is a medium brown. I think we got 4 out of the beagle my daughter bred her to, and 2 out of the neighbors mutt. Initially, Katie was suppose to be bred to a male coppernose that I chose because he has good blood lines- thanks to my daughter and neighbors, it is now a loss of $250 cash for breeding to that male I chose- but they have agreed to let us try again later should I choose to.
At this point, I have not decided on if I am gonna breed Katie again, the planned breeding was to be the first and only litter I would get out of her. As for the pup, I am not going to breed her- but she is a pretty pup, and she is gonna be a great hunter like her Mama. With Katie alone, we run a minimum of 4 rabbits in a 6 hour span, and a minimum of 6 squirrel in a 5 hour span, depending on what we are after. With her pup- we should do even better.
I am rather picky about my dogs, especially if they are hunting dogs. So, I have watched this litter from day one since my hubby wanted to keep one, I am final say around here when it comes to choosing dogs. I was hoping one of the coppernose babies would show signs of being promising for hunting, but the one that does is pretty nice and I am happy with that. Eventually, the one we keep will be spayed, when she is old enough. As for Katie- I have not totally decided on what I want to do.

wet substrate question
She definately looks like a Katie I'm sorry that it didn't work out like you wanted, that's alot of money to spend on a stud. I bet he was a gorgeous little booger too. It's really considerate of the breeders to let ya'll try again, whenever and if you decide to breed her again.
I hope you end up with a good hunter out of that cute little female. She's just adorable. Can't wait to see pictures of when she's bigger and you can see all of her features

Yeah I got lucky that they are willing to allow us to try again later.
I think this time tho~ with this pup, I am gonna start training her earlier than I did Katie. Originally, Katie was just gotten as a companion animal for me, but her nose started to get her in trouble so to speak at 3 months old, so I decided to go with it and let her hunt, and it has been a win win situation. I did not have to do alot to get her hunting, other than get her use to diffeent scents of critters she would hunt and tell them apart. She ended up showing me something I never thought I would enjoy (hunting with a dog), and it has led to a more active lifestyle actually, which has been good for me. Once deer season is over here, I am gonna take her and the pup out to the maple farm and run Katie and see what the pup does. Hehe- I can just hear the bay of 2 beagles- rather than 1. We have yet to name the pup, but boy does she got a voice now, and she does mock bay with Katie when I get Katie all excited now.
This week we have had to start supplimenting the pups feedings with puppy chow, Katie is not feeding them as often as she was. Some of them eat better than others, but the "keeper" has a great appetite.
After putting some thought into it, I think I may go ahead and breed Katie come summer to the male I originally chose. Hmm, but something tells me that I will end up keepin one of those pups too- haha- I am well on my way to a mini pack of beagles. I just hope that once we get to moving back to Arizona they will adjust OK, the desert is mighty different to hunt in rather than woods. Still squirrel and rabbit, but different scenery.

All's well that ends well, but I'd have been a mighty irritated mama if that were my kid and dog. :?
