New Hedge Hog

So I decided to pick up a Hedge Hog from the pet store today
I got him home and he is such a great pet, really curious, However he is a bit skittish
Hopefully soon he will become a bit more Tame, Its gonna be rough to get started. Those spikes hurrt!

Give me 2 months

Awsome! I remember thinking about getting one of those a while back, but I couldn't find any at petsores around me in order to check them out firsts. Anyway, you HAVE to post some pciks of it!

hedgehogs are sooo cute! but i never thought their spikes really hurt. hmm.

man i remember when they had 2 at this petstore i used to always watch them there funny when they are active but the were usually sleepin in their little house

I had to find it out the hard way...

They dont bite, their main mehtod of defense is to curl up in a ball and fling thier spikes out. and boy does it hurt. Not only does it draw blood but the holes left in your skin pain for about 5 days afterward. Hopefully he'll be tame enoguh soon that this wont be a factor. He is the cutest guy u'll ever see. He's black with white underneah and white spikes. Overall a great pet but needs a tremendous amount of work.

GReat! And since i read your post, I just figured like doing some research on hedgies for the hell of it. Anyway, they are suppose to get very tame, the thing is just handle them as much as possible and they should be fine. THe key is to get them used to your scent. So if you feel like using gloves for a while, make sure they smell like you. And I guess you were sorta unluckey with the spine thing, because I guess the points of the spines vary from each hedgehog. So you happened to get one of the "blood-drawers", while other hedgehogs have needels that are rounded and blunt at the end. But thats jsut what I read. Anyway, good luck with it!

But i guess i am unlucky this little buger has spines as sharp as needles, Easily drawing blood
And your right in everything you said. Scent is the key. I have placed an old worn piece of a t shirt in his cage to try and get him used to it.
It's all in time, which we all have alot of so im sure he will be just fine. and hopefully down the road i will have a breeding project for myslef
