Bedding?

I'm getting a Mexican black kingsnake in a month and I'm wondering which is the best choice out of Zoo Med - Forest floor, Aspen and Zoo Med - Repti bark to use as a bedding in her glass tank and I'm wondering if Exo Terra - forest moss would be the best choice to use in her humid hide.
I've read that Aspen bedding isn't the best choice due to humidity problems and well I haven't really found anything else informative, so I'm asking you experienced ones.

We abandoned conventional bedding a few years back and went full on planted natural, fog n all. My tanks prettymuch maintain themselves except for pruning.

But;

Aspen sucks for humidity, but made for easy cleaning
Cypress is awsome for humidity, but walks a fine line with being too moist.
Eco earth is a good all arounder. A slight mix with proper moss and some cypress makes good bedding. Using it straight up, it may clog a vent. Stuffs very fine and molds when too moist.

Most of these folks use the humid hide or container method. Seems to work out ok for them.


I know im like the only natural guy here. But i hope the lil bit o memory scraping helped

Mexican King do not require high humidity, ambient humidity will be more than enough so aspen is a suitable substrate, personally for colubrids I prefer sanichips.

Okay, that cleared things up for me, thankies.

Ah, the person who I'm getting the king from just said she uses sanichips.
She didn't know the hide sizes what she uses for her, and I thought about buying her two Exo Terra - Reptile cave M or L size.
She weights 200g and is 80cm long and I assume she still grows, so what would be the best size in the long run?

Hides should be sized for her current size, not what she'll grow into, and erring on the small size is not a problem - they like small, snug hides. Our corn snake that size has one hide that's 3.5" X 5"; and one that's 6" x 6", which is big for him.

I understand but too big of a hide wouldn't be a problem, if it were too big I could stuff the hide with something to make it small enough for her and when it gets too small, I can take out whatever I put in the hide to make it big enough for her.
A good money saver and I wouldn't have to store up useless hides.

But thanks for the measurements, I know what to buy now!

Your idea of stuffing a too large hide with something like frog moss or something to make it se more snug is what I do. Most commercially available hides other than cork bark flats are much too large height wise for small snakes imo.

Yeah, I don't have cork flats, just those reptile caves as a hide.
