Is this a good idea? I would just need to sterilize everything before adding it to his home, right?

Yup, just steralize everything and make sure to sand down/grind any sharp jagged edges

I would scrub with bleach and bake the crap out of it first. Should kill any and everything there is around. Don't want to get mites this way.
