The His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman. My favorite series. First book is The Golden Compass, which they made a decent movie out of a few years back.

It's not strictly a sequal, but Diana Wynne Jones wrote a book to follow it called "castle in the air" about Abdullah. It's inspired by "Arabian Nights" and Sophie along with her daughter and Howl don't show up till the last third of the book, but it was also excellently written
