    *Digs through brain*

Warning, this information is coming from memory and this was in the 80's...when I was a kid.

Well, you'd need a cage of suitable size, perches, water, food, dishes, some toys, a um....cuttlebone. Parakeets can be taught to "talk" and usually males are the best for that. You can handle them.

If you get a mirror for a parakeet it will spend a lot of time talking to the mirror and ignoring everybody else.

They make good pets if you get them young, its best to get a hand fed baby and only one, parakeets like most birds are very social and if you have more than two they will bond with eachother instead of you.

I used to have two of them but unfortuneatly i could not handle them, somebody got them for me as a gift from a petstore, they were a burden so i gave them away.

My family had a few parakeets in the 80s too, when I was growing up. One of them, Duran, was really friendly and would let you hold him, and my sister swore he could say "hello" though I never heard him. He was a white one, not sure if he was a real albino or not, but he lived for over ten years. He got out once and one of our cats had him near death, and my sister picked that cat up and practically threw him in the air to rescue the poor bird! (who was not harmed. Neither was the cat.)
They're cool, but they can be really messy. I'd stay away from those little bird cages and get something nice and big so that he/she could have lots of room.

I have two, princess and sprite. You need a suitable size cage, perches, parakeet seed, gravel (they cant digest without this), water with birdie vitamins, and some toys. I put paper towels at the bottoms for when they p00.
