    Herpstat 1

I have a thermostat for a snake rack and I put the probe in the middle of the rack sandwiching it between the bottom of the enclosure and the heat tape. Now when I measure the temperature of the bottom of the enclosure it is not what the probe is reading. Is there a proper place I should put the probe? Is it better to put it inside the tub over the heat source to regulate the tub heat? Or on the heat tape? Thank you

It's not necessarily going to match. You need a temp gun or IR thermometer to measure the tub surface and adjust the t-stat up or down so the tub eventually gets to the temp you want.

Also I would secure the probe between the heat tape and the rack shelf somewhere away from the tub. If it's between the tape and the tub then it may move around when you slide out the tub in and out of the rack.

I have a temp gun with the laser. It's just not measuring but on the spyder robotics website it says I can place the probe inside the tub and secure it down over the heat source to read the temperature of the tub so your measuring the tub heat and not just the heat tape temperature, is this okay?

No. Do not put the probe inside the tub. If you were to place the probe inside the tub it could easily be moved, urinated on, or flooded by water which would make the tstat thing the tub is cold and ramp up the heat source causing the heat source to over heat the tub and put your snake in danger.

Its is completely normal to have different temps read at the tstat probe and the cage floor. You lose some heat as it travels through the materials so the tub floor should be a little cooler than the heat source.

Also measure the temp directly on the tub floor and not on top of the substrate. The substrate should be thin over the heat source as well, 1/4 inch works well.

NOTE- NEVER use tape inside a tub, tank, cage, anything where the snake can reach it. It can really harm your snake.

Thank you. I put it on the middle rack outside of the tub on the heat tape and taped the wire down where the probe is not covered and touch the tape.
