    Wobbles

Can someone explain what a wobbler is please?

Is it genetic or environmental? I mean what causes it?

What are the signs, and how does it affect the snake? Do they die young or what?

Just curious, because I keep hearing about it

    Re: Wobbles

A wobble is a genetic disorder found in the spider gene or anything that carries the gene. It is a disability to control the upper neck muscles, causing a literal "wobble" of the head. You can look it up on YouTube, but the ones shown on YouTube are mainly showing the worse side of the wobble. There are some spider morphs that have such a slight wobble that it is unnoticeable if you're not watching from just the right angle. Hope this helped

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlX58vxt0AU This is a pretty intense one. There are other videos & articles if you do a Google search. Wobbles are genetic and usually seen in spiders / morphs with spider genetics. I don't think anyone really knows why, but something about the mutation can cause a loss of motor function in the head and neck. Not all of them wobble though! I have one with a wobble and one with no wobble at all. I've heard that sometimes hatchlings are fine, but then can develop a wobble as they get older. I've also heard about snakes losing their wobbles as they age.

They can eat, poop, and shed normally. I've never heard of a snake dying from a wobble, but I imagine that severe cases that prohibit them from performing basic functions as hatchlings are probably culled. My spider that wobbles has no issues whatsoever when there's food. Strikes and never misses.

After she poops she likes to slither through it and smear it everywhere though, so she's obviously not the brightest crayon in the box.

My lesser spider has a wobble, and I'm very glad I had read about it before I purchased him. Knowing about it and encountering it for the first time is dramatically different, and I nearly dropped him when the first time I held him he immediately corkscrewed in my hands. He's calmed down a lot since then, but its still very obvious he has some neurological quirks. He's very mobile while I'm handling him, and a good half of the time his head is totally upside down (I'd post a picture, but like I said, he's very mobile). He also stalks his (frozen) food with his head tilted. Makes him unique, doesn't hurt him, gives me a chuckle every time I hold him.

Spiders are very unique because of the wobble. Every spider has the wobbles. Just some noticable and some not so much. My spider displays by a tilt of the head when she is held. My Sugar Spider when you hold her she goes nuts and slithers around like she is drunk. But neither has a problem with eating pooping or anything else.

    Re: Wobbles

Spiders and spider combos are awesome even if they are the window lickers of the ball community. I have 3 and love their quirks it makes them different 😀

I believe womas can also have a wobble, from what I've read. I don't own a spider yet and am unsure if I will due to the wobbling. Yes, it could be mild, but at the same time, I'd hate to get one that developed a severe case and couldn't function. I do love the way spiders look though.
