Love snakes but the rats lead me here......

I found my way here from the rat board I frequent, no idea how that happened but to be honest you snake folks are waaaaaay nicer than the majority of the uppidy rat folks. I've always had a curiosity about snakes, all types, colors, lengths, just any snake. You could catch me vegging in the livingroom on a Saturday morning deeply engrossed in a show about huge pythons or the emerging baby garter snakes. I am content to just learn about snakes, I have no desire to actually own one (hope that is okay). I am way to big of a rodent lover to own a snake, even the videos of feeding frozen/thawed on youtube squig me out (wimp!!) But general snake stuff interests me very much, the colors, the patterns, the different types of snake all totally cool! Glad to meet you all and I hope it is okay to admire your collections from afar.

    Becky

Hey welcome.....too late, you can only fight that infatuation so long. Sounds like a snake is in your future. Don't say I didn't tell you so! :-)

Truth be told I would LOVE a corn snake, the kids and I always oogle the little ones at Petco/Petsmart (yes, bad place to get one) they are so cute. I personally just couldn't feed him/her.

I think its safe to say most of us are animal lovers in general here. Yet we feed our pets of choice another animal. You'd be surprised how fast you become adjusted to it, its the circle of life. Especially f/t. they are bred to be eaten, no different than beef or chicken.

True true, I would just have to get over the "poor baby" factor of it....funny, most probably have to get over the "icky mouse/rat" I have the opposite issue. On a big plus side I think I may have found a feeder/breeder for rats that is nearby, on this very board (we are looking for our next two pet ratties).

Lol not so much the "icky rat" part, but I'll tell you this. I'd rather take a snake bite then a rodent bite any day of the week!

I love rats and mice and had them for pets for years. I didn't think I'd be able to own them at the same time as snakes, but 6 months of handling frozen/thawed and I honestly think I'd be fine. At this point I no more associate a frozen/thawed rat with the living thing than I associate a package of ground beef with a cow. I recognize that they're the same animal, and the f/t have faces and all but. They're just meat.

Not sure if that makes me callous or not, but it is what it is.

and I think I'll probably get another pair of rats in the next few months.

If Satomi(Nikki) pops in here to say hi, she's super nice and one of our biggest rodent people here.

I was reading the snake bite thread the other day and I'm going to have to agree with you! I worked at a pet shop for 2 years and was bitten by everything from hamsters to ferrets (OWIE!!!). A bite from a ball python sounds like a walk in the park compared to rodents and other furry pets.

    Hi!

    Welcome to the group.

Most of us are big rodent lovers! Hope to see you around the Rat subforum here.
There are a few show breeders here on here too.

I love both reptiles and rats equally. (Maybe the rats a little bit more. Shh. Don't tell the ball pythons)
But it all comes down to the fact that the snakes have to eat something. And I'm not going to jeopardize their health due to personal views on rodents.

I have my own Rattery (Pacific Coast Rattery on facebook). That stock is different than my feeder breeders. I breed my own feeders and it does get really sad for me. But I like knowing that my rats get quality care and treatment compared to commercial mill bred feeder rats. I know that they get quality feed and are healthy, thus my snakes are eating quality food too.

And I totally agree about how the snake people are so much nicer than the folks on rat boards, which is why I stopped going to rodent forums and just stick here. Something about rats just bring waves of constant drama. lol

But anyway, hope you stick around and enjoy the forum. Please make a thread and share your critters!

    BTW, Thanks Pyrate!
