RIP Sylvia :(
I honestly never though I would need to use this board for quite some time. However, in the midst of a happy event, I lost a pet rat that I will forever miss.
Her name was Sylvia and she was a feeder rat who never got eaten so I raised her like a pet until I started breeding rats. She suffered major complications during the labor process. I elected to put her down humanely and did a c-section to try and save her pups. All twelve little ones are alive and well.
RIP Sylvia, mommy loves you. You did a great job showing me your twelve little babies.

I'm graduating nursing school in two weeks and I want to be a labor nurse. I will say that even though I was immensely attached to Sylvia, I went into "nursing mode" and just did what was necessary. It doesn't make it suck any less, but it did give me the strength and courage to do what I knew I needed to do instead of just standing back and letting them all die.
I bet you'll find your inner strength when the time comes. I hope it's not under similar circumstances, though.

So sorry for your loss of Sylvia. We lost a dear old rat this weekend too.

Sorry for your loss. Losing pets are no fun. No fun at all.

So far the babies are doing well. 9 of the 12 have fresh milk bands, the others look like they are digesting. I'm pretty sure their foster mom is treating them well. Even though this is her first shot at being a mother, she's going down in my book of "good mothers" because she's been so good taking care of this new litter. If you had asked me two months ago who would be the best mother of all my females, she would not have been the one I picked. She's shy and prefers you to just leave her alone. But she takes such good care of the babies. I couldn't have asked for a better mom to raise these little ones.

Wow, I am so sorry to hear for your loss That's so sad. I know it must be awful. Losing a piece of your family, no matter how small or fuzzy is always going to hurt. I hope your days get a little bit easier and those pups grow up to be the best looking, happiest rat pups ever pulled out.
Rat love from Louisville,
-B
