Quarantine
So I've only had my first ball python for about six months and I'm preparing for a new snake relatively soon, now I've sort of scanned this site and I've notice people mention a quarantine on new snakes, I don't know if I have to do this and for how long.

its on the safe side .. especially if ur getting something from someone on the streets or a pet store .. and if u have a rack system u don't want to put a new snake in a rack or in a snake room with the possibility of it having something and putting the rest of ur snakes at risk .. if u use tanks and plan on putting this one in a tank i would just put it on the other side of the room and u should be fine

Re: Quarantine
I quarantine all of my snakes for a month if I know that they're coming from a reputable breeder. If the source is from a new breeder, or pet store, or if I know the balls were raised in house with boas, it's three months, to try to wait out BIC if it's present. Usually a month is good though, for those standard illnesses. Make sure to wash your hands after handling the new snake! It's easy to forget if they're in another room and you want to check on the first one.

I QT for 6 months minimum regardless.
1 month is not long enough QT in my opinion.
Some have claimed that some illnesses have been seen to lie dormant and become active at 9 months. So some vets are starting to advocate 1 year QTs.
QT should be in a totally different area/room as your snake.
Being in the same room defeats the purpose of QT since they are still exposed to each other via airborne nasties. The point is to keep them separate.
You want to use different tools for your QT and your resident animals. For example, using different tongs for feeding to avoid cross contamination.
Work with your resident animals first before handling a QT animal. This is also to avoid cross contamination and risk to your animals.

The half-life of permethrin in water is 30 days, and about a week if exposed to direct sunlight.

Re: Quarantine
Ok. I'm starting to build my collection in a big way of I stick to that I'll have more snakes in qt than my collection. Then what about if you have a snake in QT for 2 months and than get the more. At up a different QT?

You can have another QT or put those with your first QT. But the QT time will have to be reset back to 0 days for those animals since they are exposed to the new animals.
