One of my adult female breeder rats has something very wrong with her. her head has started to tilt to the side. This has only happened in the past couple weeks, and I had her for well over six months. Has anyone ever encountered this, and any theories about what it is?

A friend of mines cat was doing that and it was due to an inner ear infection that caused the ear drum to burst. The cat is okay now just very disoriented and walking with it head tilted to the left. I don't know if rats are the same way but something to think about. Good luck in finding out what it is.

It's actually called Head Tilt. It's not usually fatal and they can live the rest of their life with it. It's usually caused by an inner ear infection. If you want, take her to the vet and see if it is indeed an ear infection. If so, the vet can prescribe ear drops to use for 1-2 weeks non-stop. It shouldn't be expensive. They're only ear drops for pete's sake. He will give you the ear drops only if the eardrum is intact. If it's not, then she will live with her world tilted.

Oddly enough, it seems like the condition has lessened a bit. Still walks around sometimes with her head tilted, but not as much. Maybe it'll work itself out...
