    New ball python!

Hooray! I just got my first ball python It's been a little bit of a challenge to get ahold of a BP that I really like. I've had three people back out on me, but now my little cinnamon male is here.

He's a 2012 snake and a little bit on the slim side. The seller was said he was keeping him on the small side since the snake didn't fit into his breeding plans. I'm going to get him on rat pups and hopefully he'll start gaining some weight, but do you think his restricted diet will have any impacts on his overall health?

I'm not sure what to name him, any ideas?

His weight doesn't look bad, I'd rather see a snake slightly underweight than fat. Given his age/size I think he'll be eating small rats, not pups. How much does he weigh?

I didn't think to weigh him before I put him away in his vivarium, but the breeder had him listed at about 320g

I also have some small rats out in the freezer, so if he's ready that works too. His width just seemed a little bit narrow to me, but again I don't usually keep pythons, and I didn't actually hold him for very long before putting him away.

I pulled him out and my scale is reading 270 grams. So maybe my scale or the seller's scale isn't calibrated well, the seller's weight is older and the snake has lost weight, or something? I don't know. But he's still looking good to me so I'm not too worried.

    Re: New ball python!

Definitely get a weight on him, at 320 gr you're looking at large weanlings or the smallest of the small rats. Also if the ad was posted a while ago he could have grown in the meantime. I bought two last year that were 100 gr heavier than the seller advertised, which was a very nice surprise.

ETA: just saw your update, 270 gr I'd feed weanling rats.

Okay, for a name I'm thinking Verum.

It comes from the latin name for one species of cinnamon tree, Cinnamomum verum. I want to come up with a name that starts with "V" since I have sort of a pattern going on with having two animals with names that start with the same letter. Ziggy - Zara, Tikva - Tarnish, Van der Waals - ?

I'm not sure though. Any other ideas?
