Thermometer Probe?

Hi all,

I'm sure this question has been asked millions of times, but I wasn't able to find a thread about it. Anyways, my thermometer probes are currently under the bedding in my tank. I turned the thermostat that is hooked up to the UTH all the way up to see, there is no snake in the tank of course, and the thermometer reads 98.2, but when I use an infrared thermometer on top of the bedding, it only reads 87. I am using aspen bedding, not sure if that makes a difference. Should I maybe take some of the bedding out, leaving a thinner layer?

How thick is the layer of aspen, and is it chipped aspen (sani-chips) or is is kind of shredded (allows air pockets) Your substrate could be too thick or the depending on the aspen used the air pockets could be causing the heat loss. I had the same issue with my corn snake.

how long did u leave the uth on with the thermostat i had to leave my own about three hours for it to get completly heated up and also what do u have them in and if its a glass tank does it have a screened top

It does look pretty thick, I'm going to take some out and thin it out a little. It's Zoo Med Aspen Snake Bedding.


It's only been on four about an hour and a half, that may be it. It's a glass tank with a screen top and a sheet of plexiglass on top of the screen. The plexiglass has a hole in it for a heat lamp and smaller holes for air.

Your aspen needs to be pretty thin, no more than ½" thick.
