    Baby Guinea Pig

So my wife and I were debating on ways to teach my daughter responsibility when taking care of animals and decided to get her a guinea pig (what she chose). We found one on craigslist with a full setup for dirt cheap and then rescued two others that were in a bad situation. Patches and Fluffy were in an incredibly filthy environment, had matted fur, desperate need of a bath, no hide in the cage, the list goes on. We only wanted to get one but being the type that couldn't just leave one behind in such horrid conditions we ended up taking them both home. We got them both cleaned up, trimmed, to include having to cut out some matting on Fluffy. Everyone is doing just awesome. So now fast forward about a month and a half. Both my wife and I have been noticing that Patches was getting very big. Well turns out she was pregnant. Because we didn't know how old she was, guessing under 6 months, we took her to the vet to make sure everything was OK. Vet stated as long as she looks and acts healthy the only concerns would be during the birthing of the pups. He estimated no more than 2 weeks to go though. So today my family went to the Vernon County Fair for most of the day only to come home to a little wonderful surprise. Patches had a little girl! Momma and Baby are doing great. I will post a picture here shortly.

Aww so cute. I'm always amazed at how fully developed guinea pigs are at birth. So here's the big question... Are you going to keep the little one?

Nice job with the rescuing, and I hope all works out well for you and them

be sure to separate any males from them or you will continue to have more little furry balls of joy. with guinea pigs the females have to bred before one year of age the first time or you shouldnt breed them at all. The pelvic bone begins to fuse together at about a year old. It can cause serious birthing complications. (death most common problem) most people recommend breeding females between 6 and 8 months old or 500 grams. males are sexualy mature at 4 months but you should separate males from momma and any other sisters as early as 4 weeks. they are capable of breeding that early but it is rare.
