Length of Quarantine

So, on June 7th, I caved and picked up 2 gorgeous boys from our local pet store & put them directly in QT. They've been eating wonderfully, have great temperaments and have been relatively free of any health concerns. A few weeks after we picked them up, I noticed a few of those damn mites on one of them. I went absolutely loony while I waited for my PaM to get to our border mailbox. I soaked both of them & washed their bins every 2nd day & picked as many of the little hell raisers out of their scales as I could. The PaM came, I treated both enclosures, gave them a final soak & called it a day. I only ended up finding 2-3 dead on their paper towels. 2 weeks passed with no further sightings, but I gave their enclosures a second wash & spray down with PaM just for my peace of mind. I also treated our other 4 enclosures as well...just because haha. I'm pleased to say THEY'RE NOW GONE!

They've both had perfect sheds since the treatments and I'm sure they're far more comfortable.

Now, my question is, when August 7th rolls around, do you think it's safe to move them into the room with our other collection or should we wait until September? Could they somehow still develop an RI or would that have shown itself by now? Are there any other health issues that could present themselves between the 2-3 month mark?

I do 90 day quarantines, if anything shows up during the 90 days the clock resets. No exceptions. It may be overkill but better safe than sorry.

That said, chances are that you won't have any issues.

I QT for 6 months minimum. Some people do less or more. Some illnesses are known to incubate up to 9 months before becoming active. I know some reptile vets are starting to advocate a 1 year QT period.

Its honestly up to you on how long you want to QT. But just be aware of what's going on with your animals and new additions.

Would you suggest all new additions undergo a fecal exam? How much does one generally cost?

I've read 90 days on average. It's what I did when I added (twice) to my collection. As long as I saw normal behavior, growth, etc then I would ultimately look towards the vet visit during the last week of QT. The clean bill of health from the vet seals the deal for me. These are the things I've learned from BP.net and adopted it with great success to date. Hope it helps.

Yes. If there was a reason to take a snake to the vet, they would probably be in QT anyway. I personally don't normally take a snake randomly for a annual check up and what not unless something is already wrong.

And no for fecals since I technically don't bring the animals with me for those. I just take in poop samples in a baggie.

Should every snake one buys have an exam? Probably, probably not. It depends on the individual. I paid a pretty nickel for an emperor pin in '11, she merited getting checked out. I had more difficult of a time finding a good herp vet than paying for fecal exams. It's been a few years for me but it was under $100.00.

All snakes should have a fecal done. It costs about $15 at my vet.

Now for a physical exam, that's $40-60, which I normally don't do unless I know it's needed (for RI or something).
