The time has finally come to get Sprocket adequate caging for the rest of her life. I've decided to build one by modifying plans i obtained at *cough* another reptile site i sometimes go to *cough*. The guy who built that one uses it for a cottonmouth. I think if its secure enough to house hots, Sprocket wont be getting out. The cage calls for the inside "box" to be lined with tileboard/shower surround. Has anyone ever used this? I've heard it is good for keeping moisture in and ease of cleaning because its made to go around your shower/tub. I'm using plexiglass for fold down doors and heating pads for the heat. I may have to add a light or che, i'm not too sure yet. Rest assured that i will set up the cage, put it in the room it is going in, and let it "burn in" for a couple of days before Sprocket even gets in it to make sure the temps and humidity are perfect.
Has anyone else ever built their own cages? If so, what did you use?

i never thought about using any form of tile but i don't see why it wouldn't work. as long as youre able to heat it properly. keep in mind that the material might conduct heat a lot more than say plastic or glass, so getting it too hot would probably be easy. sorry i'm not much help in this department, when the time comes to upgrade for my bci... i'm searching for the biggest freakin' tub i can find.

Its not actually tile. Its like masonite with a tile like covering. It comes in sheets like plywood or drywall 4'x8', and is really thin 1/8 of an inch. I used it many times when i worked construction to line people's bathrooms.

Carson, that tileboard is complete crap. I had it in my shower before I moved and it was brand new when we moved in 5 years ago and started falling apart the first time I cleaned it -- the very first week I lived there -- without any abrasives. I wouldn't use it for any animal or person that I liked.

Really Marla? I've heard some pretty good things about it. I've used it before, when i worked construction, in people's bathrooms. I'll just have to wait and see what happens. I probably wont get to finish this project until Wednesday because of work, and then i'm going to let it "burn in" for at least a week and do some tests to see how well the stuff holds up to moisture. Sprocket is notorious for spilling her water bowl over and she just loves to soak, so i need to see what happens when it gets wet. I'll let you guys know how it turns out!
