Flames, Blushing, Fading and other markings.

It may be easier overall to define the different color/pattern schemes of the ball python overall. Dorsal stripes/patterns, base color (spiders would be golden/brown, pastels yellow, mojaves green/grey, etc.), and lateral features.

To add to the dorsal features, don't forget keyholes (I can't even remember if you added them at this point, apologies if you did!), and we should include a definition to differentiate them from alien heads and hooks.

I would definitely keep flames separate from blushing; blushing I would consider the gradient within the dorsal and lateral patterns (such as the black/grey on a super pastel). There's also the overall body color to consider, like gold blush mojaves. Is there a term in place for that? If not, I'd just call it a base color gradient. Sugars, spiders, and calicoes may need their own terminology for the sharper edges between the base color and the white.

I think for the side markings there should be an umbrella term (possibly rosettes), and within that bucket you could use alien heads, doughnuts, and chains as descriptors. This would help those new to the hobby learn where they should be looking overall, and then break it down further from that point.

I really appreciate how you're demonstrating pattern areas by highlighting them with a low-opacity color. It makes it a lot easier to see what you're referring to than it is when the areas are circled (Hunter's Guide). Nothing against HG- the guides were valuable, but the big circles were sometimes confusing.

I don't think I'm going to be talking about any morphs specifically, although they will no doubt end up being frequently mentioned, since my goal is to try and define markings. Colour as it is probably will not come heavily into play in this guide either as I'm trying to create something that can more or less applied to any BP, normals included. The focus is pretty much marking only.

I think Mike mentioned keyholes as "hooks", specifically in reference to YBs, but I'm thinking these terms sound more or less the same? If you can provide visual evidence that they're not, they I'll recategorize.

I mentioned the white that Calicos/Sugars and Spiders had as "White Sides" and it's very much it's own thing in comparison to things like Flaming/Fading. I also think that in terms of the Gold Blush Mojaves or other gradients like that found on morphs, it's still a try of Flaming/Fading but noticeably more pronounced. Perhaps others will agree or disagree on this but I'm not going to make a separation of the terms unless more people voice that they think there should be.

Flames, Blushing, Fading and other markings.

Here is what I think of in regards to hooks- it's an offshoot of the rosette pattern, and could be over the spine in individuals with more aberrant patterns (less lateral symmetry).

I'm about to make myself look really stupid here, but hear me out. This picture (not mine) is a leopard that exhibits the hook as well as something like the keyhole that I had in mind. The keyhole I'm thinking of, however, was within a black dorsal stripe on a brown snake, not a continuation of the side pattern. Does what I'm saying make sense as far as what I'm referring to? I'm going to continue looking in the meantime.

Do you think you think you could highlight or put an arrow to what you're referring to on the Leopard because I can't tell what I should be looking at there??

Re: Flames, Blushing, Fading and other markings.

I found a better example (quoted to credit chago11- it's their snake). The keyhole, at least the one I have in mind, is distinctly a part of the dorsal stripe, rather than an open rosette extending over the dorsal. I saw a few on mojave dorsal stripes as well. I'll defer to you as to whether or not a key hole and a hook are one and the same. My only argument for them being different is that dorsal stripes are sometimes different colors than rosettes (as with mojaves) and that keyholes are consistently small and well-connected to the dorsal stripe- not as random in placement as hooks are in more aberrant-patterned individuals.

Ah, I see then, that is a different type of patterning then. My Albino has some like that also I think a lot of the Rios produced at DWHerp have similar dorsals.

I'll make a note of it.
