    My poor little Dexter.

    Today, just a few hours ago really, this girl left us. I am incredibly upset and sad about this event, she seemed to have really had the odds stacked against her in the last few days with an RI and now Pin Worms but I had truly believed that she would be able to recover so this death was somewhat unexpected.

    Sorry little girl, you will be missed very much. )':

    On a side note, I will be taking her in for a necropsy and will update with the result as for cause of death when they a given.

    I got back necropsy results on the 8th but got a little sidetracked in posting them on here. Anyway, here's the story on what happened that led to her death;

    Dexter came down with signs of RI, which was confirmed to be bacterial, just a few weeks ago (about mid April) and we had started treatment for that just last week. Yesterday, I was taking her into the vet again since a stool sample had also confirmed she had Pinworms which needed to be treated as well. On top of all this, the vet and myself were heavily concerned about her weight since she was refusing food for almost a month and down to 83g (healthy she was about 115g). It was agreed upon that along with the Pinworm treatment, she’d be tube fed some Carnivore Care to give her some food to go off of for the time being, which many of you can imagine is a very standard treatment that usually does not have negative results. On the return trip home she regurgitated and literally as I was walking in the door, I began to notice that something was definitely wrong as she appeared to be convulsing in the delicup I had her in. I gave the vet an emergency call and was told to give Dexter some good, downward shakes in an attempt to possibly loosen any fluid that may have been stuck in her airway/lungs but I think by the point this she was already lost. I drove to a different vet that was closer, as the my main clinic is a 30 minute drive out of town, hoping that she may have been able to be saved but they pronounced her dead soon after.
    The necropsy confirmed that Dexter’s lungs were heavily inflamed due to a Viral Pneumonia, along with the Bacterial RI which was already making it difficult for her to breath, and upon regurging, inhaled some of the food which ended up blocking her trachea. Essentially she suffocated to death and unfortunately due to how weak she already was, there just wasn’t enough time for us to save her.
    I don’t place any blame on my vet, they really offered the best support and care that anyone could have given and this was all just very a rare occurrence that no one had anticipated. It’s just incredibly unfortunate that this was something that ended up happening to me and my snake.
    On a side note, my vet clinic has been incredibly kind with the entire situation and the staff, many of whom are herp keepers/breeders themselves, have even offered to help replace or find a new animal for me since I had spent about $370 on Dexter's treatment. Not sure if I'm going to actually take the offer, it's so much more than I ask of them but the thought is just so incredibly generous. u v u

    Thats terrible, sorry about your loss. You really did everything you could though, and I'm glad you have such a great vet to work with.

    And apparently I'm following you on tumblr, I thought this post looked familiar. I hope all of your other snakes keep doing fantastically for you~
