Trimming backs of tubs to fit closer to back heat tape?

Well I know the title sounds a little confusing, but here's what I'm trying to do. I just built a rack out of melamine that I will be moving my snakes into here shortly. I am using back heat because it works best for my situation at the moment. You know how the tubs have handles on them so the lids can snap on? Well has anyone trimmed off one of those handles with say a sander or anything to get it to fit closer to the heat tape, thus being able to set the t-stat to a lower temperature to achieve an optimum temp inside the tub?

This is just something that came across my mind as I was thinking of any modifications I can do to my rack. What do you guys think?

As long as you're not compromising the integrity of the tub, I don't know why you couldn't? I don't know if it would be worth the hassle, though.

Yeah it's just a random thought that came to me as I was studying. ha! I was just wondering if anyone had done it and if it was worth it, or not. Just wanted to hear other people's voices so I know the one in my head isn't COMPLETELY crazy.

the racks I built using melamine uses 28 qt sterilite tubs, also back heat. they work just fine without messing with the tubs. run them for a few days first to see what you have temp wise. the results might be better than what you thought might happen. if not you can always try and cut them. and you can record the temps before and after cutting one to see if it's better and worth doing all of them. if not you can always buy one more tub to replace the one you cut. good luck and let us know you findings if you decide to cut. don

Buy the equivalent size Vision tub if they have it. Their v70's only have a handle on the front side and all the edges are very compact. Shipping's not horrible and they arrive just a few days after ordering.

The tubs with the little snap handles - I pop those things off. I wouldn't actually cut into the tub itself though because I feel it would compromise it and they would end up cracking or bending after that. The lip is curled specifically to give the tub strength.

how and why does back heat fit better into your plans?
You will need the room to be warmer than if you use a rack with belly heat, just to get the ambient temps up high enough.
