    Do you feed the females at shorter intervals like every 4 days to get them to gain that much weight?

    Well, they should be up to the weight you want them to be at BEFORE you even introduce the male to her (and whatever your feeding regimen is for her to get her to that weight is up to you). But as they are breeding, if she will eat, I say feed her. Then, if she doesn't, no big deal because she is of adequate weight to produce successfully.
