hello, i just got the july 2004 issue of Reptiles Magazine, and they have a nice article on Hognose snakes.

they said that western's were the most common hognose to be kept.

can i have some info on them? anything you got.

and, if you can, can you answer some of these questions (all basic ones):

how long when fully grown? (ive read like only 2 feet, which would be good)

what do they eat (from baby to adult)?

    what temps/humidity?

    size tank?

    temperment?

    thanks

p.s. yes, ive read that they have small fangs with a lil venom, but not enough to really hurt you, just leave an irratated area on your skin. so i dont really care that much, but does that mean they dont like to be handled?

Western Hognoses are great snakes....I'll try and give you as much info as possible, lol.

    1. Females average around 24 inches, males 16-20.
    2. They eat rodents.
    3. Temps/humdity are exactly like a Cornsnake.
    4. Varies by age/size.
    5. They have great temperaments usually but some will hiss and puff up, but they are 99% bluff lol.

About their "venom"......they do have Duvernoy's Glands but they are not connected to their enlarged rear teeth......they do however have a slightly toxic saliva that has anti coagulants in it. Unless you are allergic, you are unlikely to have a bad reaction....plus they won't bite you anyway lol. I've been bitten and all it did was bleed alot lol.
