thoughts on reptile basics u.t.h please

im looking at getting one of the reptile basics u.t.h and was looking to see if any one has used them and what they thought about them. im going to be using it under 2 sterilite 6qt latch boxes that have my two kingsnakes in them and possibly a new ball or two in the future do you think the boxes will be ok with this u.t.h.
on the website it states that unless you need precise temp control they can be run without a thermostat has anyone ran one without a thermostat to see how hot they actually get.i think i'll play it safe and hook it to my herpstat just in case. any thoughts or opinions are appreciated.
here is a pic of the u.t.h
Ultratherm Undertank Heater (UTH)- 6"x 23"

I have one and it gets way too hot without a thermostat. My tub was 115 degrees F !! You may be okay if you make the substrate thick enough. I was using paper towels at the time.

Noooooo, they can melt the tub! It's dangerous for the animal and a fire hazard.

Wrong, no matter how thick your substrate is your snake can burrow and still sustain an injury. A UTH should never be used without a thermostat.

Re: thoughts on reptile basics u.t.h please

dont worry guys as i said in my post im going to run it through my herpstat. i have used the zoomed u.t.h with the herpstat before but never the reptile basics that is why i was asking if they were better in the way they control the heat, or if they were built differently in some way that made them better. im only ordering this particuler one because i needed this specific size for the space i have for my three tubs.thanks for the quick replys

I recently asked the same question. More people than not recommended the Ultratherm. Just received mine in the mail. Rich is a swell guy! Looking at a Ghost for my first BP.

I would not suggest any uth with no thermostat (Kane might be the exception but only because it is built in adjustable rheostat) The ultratherms and a few others are low density heaters. The difference is simple an 11x11 high density can easily get into the 170+ degree range where an 11x11 low density is not likely to get over 110 degree. High density heaters can and have burn an animal melted tubs ect when a t-stat controlling them fails low density are very unlikely to burn OT melt anything in the same failure. They are the last line of defense.

I would never run a uth without a thermostat. We decided to do a test on a new tub before we got the snake. Hooked up a 4watt and left it. Came back in a bit and used the temp gun and the temps were around 116-119.

I had one reptile basics and I thought it worked fine.
