I need some help. I was recently taking my weekly visit to the local pet shop and they had about three snakes of what they say are indonesian garter snakes. Well, they are severly underfed. I came home to do some research on them and all i found was some random yahoo forum with someone saying the only thing they could find was that it was called "Natrix ( Xenochrophis ) vittata" and that it wasn't a garter snake at all. They also said it is found to mildy venomous. But the pet store was taking them out and handling them with me no problem and never said anything about them being venomous. Does anyone know anything about this snake at all. I am going to go there tomorrow and purchase all three of them and see if I can get them back on track with their weight problem. Any information will help me a lot...

Yeah, it's a rear fanged colubrid. Meaning a bite would probly give you a headache and swelling. Similiar to a bee sting.

This is based on what I know about other rear-fanged colubrids such as vine snakes and mangroves. I'm not sure about this particular species though.

If it were me, I'd buy it. Other wise it'll end up with someone who knows nothing about them at all. They're a little known species.
