Got a couple ferrets, they are a laugh!

Diet is super important when it comes to smell AND longevity. Look up Wysong Epigen 90. It costs more than pet store brands and it's worth every cent. My ferrets didn't smell strongly at all once I switched them over. Their coats got super fluffy and soft, they pooped less than they did on junk kibble, and it's much easier on their organs. Another option is raw feeding if you have the resources available to you. I never tried it personally, but I've heard of people feeding them mice as a treat- pretty manageable for reptile keepers.

Don't bathe them often. Bathing strips the oils in their fur and their glands work overtime to catch up. There are sprays you can get to "freshen them up" but I didn't need to use them once they were on a protein-loaded diet.

Enjoy your carpet sharks, they're amazing little things. It's crazy how much personality is packed into such a tiny weasel. :3

Only of they are intact and not neutered. Intact males smell awful. Once they're fixed, they smell the same as females.

Plus diet has a huge impact on body condition and odor as mentioned previously. Mine are on a live prey model diet.

I live in a small town and when people find out I feed raw... omg you'd think I'm the spawn of Satan himself!!

My ferrets do not get bathed until they start to stink... that being said I've had them for over a year and they've had 1 bath. Our latest one came from a friend who bathed him EVERYDAY, I could not believe how bad his coat was.. felt like a porcupine not a ferret!
Keep the cage clean feed good food and they won't have a nasty smell

I miss my ferret. She was a blast. Used to play ferret bowling with her. I would set up some empty pop bottles, roll her up in a ball and slide her across the floor into them. And before anyone thinks poor ferret, it should be noted that after sliding through the empties, she would jump up chattering and bounce right back to me so i could pick up the spare. If she got bored with it she would just run over and pester one of the dogs, or just run around being silly, but she usually did several rounds of bowling before that.

Thanks for the thread link on the whole prey diet thing, I never knew anything about that for ferrets. Useful info if I ever decide to get another one.
Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?

I completely get ya..Ruby loves to be tossed onto the couch she comes right back for more... or being tossed in air and caught :sly:

Now the other 2 do not like it, and so we do not play with them like that

Wish I had some pics of wiggles. That was a long time ago and I didn't have a decent camera back then. pPlus I lost some pictures when a hard drive crashed many years ago. I'll just have to enjoy others shots of theirs.
