Re: rep
Participation that adds value is important; so are punctuation and capital letters. I understand that we aren't in grammar class on here, but I personally don't have any interest in buying from a breeder that doesn't take the time to type properly. Why would I believe that they give any more time or consideration to their animals?

I'm looking to get some reputation too. I think the best way would be to join groups and get involved in the herp community the most you can. I'm also going to go to shows to sell my animals so I'm going to talk a lot to the known breeders in my area. (not that there are very many)
Corns:
0.0.1 Normal; 0.1.0 Amel Motley
1.0.0 Butter Motley; 0.1.0 Charcoal

Make sure your animals are healthy and established eaters before selling them.
Treat each customer with respect, regardless of whether they are buying a normal or a morph.
The biggest factor that will affect your reputation, for better or worse, will be customer service. Everything from being available to answer questions and offer advice, to working out acceptable solutions when problems arise...

This. You don't get reputation quickly, it takes time and consistently showing that you are a great student of the industry as well.
Don't get a reputation for regurgitating information you've read somewhere, or for trying to take shortcuts.

You'll want to know a lot about anything that's in your business. You'll want to be educated enough to answer the questions your future buyers will have. Also, appearance is a big thing to me, if a pet shop looks trashy I wont buy from there. You'll want it to be clean, and organized too. As far as getting your name known, start a Facebook page, and you can pay Facebook to advertise your page for you. If you take the time to make your Facebook page nice, and interesting it will make more people want to come to the shop. You could also try posting ads on craigslist to promote your business, or even in the paper. Commercials do wonders too if you can afford it.

Don't advertise on Craigslist if you really want to be taken seriously. Besides the fact that they don't allow animal SALES in their TOS, it's rare that one goes shopping there to find reputable breeders.

Re: rep
You'd be amazed what you can find on craigslist, and they also have a section called services where MANY, MANY businesses advertise.

You need the following in no particular order
Not being underage (A contract with a minor is not enforceable therefore most people will not deal with a minor)
Hands on experience
Ability to give sound advice based on experience
Quality animals
Good ethics
Great customer service
Ability to market yourself
Good communication skills (in person, over the phone and in writing)
Time (Getting a good reputation will not happen overnight)
Etc
