    Rare snakes hatched at zoo

Numbers of Savu Pythons have dropped dramatically in the wild
Nine Indonesian pythons have hatched at Bristol Zoo Gardens.
The rare Savu pythons - the first to be bred in a European zoo - were born following a breeding programme by the zoo's reptile experts.

The creature was unknown to the scientific community in the western world until 1993.

Since their discovery, numbers in the wild have dropped dramatically as a result of the pet trade.

The Savu python is naturally found on one 100-square kilometre island in Indonesia, from which it takes its name.

The hatchlings measure 30cms in length and weigh approximately 20 grams, but will eventually grow to one metre in length.

Tim Skelton, of Bristol Zoo, said: "Nine pythons have hatched and are growing rapidly. Once mature, the snakes will be transferred to other zoos across Europe to expand the conservation breeding programme."

    Just thought I'd share

Thats cool and all, but I wouldn't call Savu pythons "rare"......they're fairly common in the pet trade and are being bred in the US by a few breeders......I bought one this weekend for $65.....not a "rare price" if you ask me.

    Hi David
I think the point of it being big news is that (at least in England) this is the first captive bred clutch they have. They are working on large conservation efforts in the hopes that they will not be wiped out totally in the wild.
they are most commonly found as wild caught which has a very detrimental effect on their native ecosystem.
But I know you can find them pretty easily here in the states.
I am just glad they were succesful in their first sucsession of their program.
    Thanks
    Rusty
PS congrats on your new snake. Savu's are wonderful pythons
Do you have any pics yet?

I seriously just said WTF as I read that.... Rare in Europe maybe... What are they, 10 years behind schedule? Geez

Olives are the ultimate liasis, but I'd still prefer a macklott's Savu's are extremely nice looking, but I wish they were bigger.
