    Goodbye Nitro

My mom's 8 year old boxer had to get put to sleep last night. It started about 6 months ago, he started drinking massive amounts of water and having accidents in the house. Testing ruled out bladder and kidney problems and diabetes. Then he started to lose weight. Our 95 lb boy was down to 70 pounds this week Then his eyes got these weird blisters in them, that eventually ruptured so I think he was blind for the last 2 weeks of his life. Then he had a minor stroke which left one of his ears and jowls uneven. I got a call from my mother at 8:30 am yesterday telling me that it was his last day, he had 3 seizures within an hour that morning, and it just wasn't fair to him. The vets believe it was something in his head, but MRI and CAT scan testing costed thousands of dollars, and then what? Cut open an 8 year old dog's head? It wasn't an option. My parents kept him comfortable for his last few weeks going down hill, and he got love every day. He was an embassador for rescue dogs. I will miss him dearly. He was my gentle giant, and one of the only furry critters I liked. Goodbye Nitro

Sorry to hear this. He looks like a gentle giant indeed. It's so hard to lose a pet when they've been with you so long.

Aww, you made me cry. I am so sorry. The poor baby. It's so hard to watch them die like that and knowing you can't stop it or fix it. I am very sorry for your loss, and for your poor momma. Nitro will be waiting at the bridge.... I have a little garden plaque, that I have to read every once in awhile to help me get through things like this, it says "If nothing ever changed, there would be no butterflies".

Losing a dog or cat that you interact with all of the time, is like losing a family member.

    Re: Goodbye Nitro

I am so sorry for your loss. I work for a Vet and recently we had a boxer of the same age with identical problems, we did everything we could for him but unfortunately there was nothing to be done. It's such a sad thing to lose a loved pet, but at least you can all know that you did everything you possibly could and made him happy in his final days. <3

Thank you everyone for your support. It really is hard to lose any pet. I asked my mom to put him down weeks ago when he started losing weight so drastically and his eye cateracts bursted but they thought he could last a little longer. I hated seeing him suffer, but I feel horrible it took him having 3 seizures in a 1 hour period for them to see how bad it really was. My son prayed last night before bed, and asked God to protect him in heaven...I lost it at that point haha dang kids. Either way, he's in a better place now.
