    Petco Surprise

I went to a Petco today about 15 minutes away to get my A. Metallica's menu and I have to say this was probably one of the only times have been thoroughly impressed by a pet store , especially a chain store. The store itself was very well organized and very clean. The reptile section (even though not much to choose from) was very well kept. The snakes all looked very healthy and alert even though there were a few in each enclosure they appeared well fed and hydrated with proper hides. I was also impressed that there were no animal oder especially in the small animal section they all had plenty of room and I saw no overcrowding. Last but not least, the staff's knowledge and requirements of the reptiles that were for sale was impressive

My petco is TERRIBLE. I've had to notify the employees about deceased snakes (3 cornies in one tank of 6 were deceased, one due to a visible impaction), my least favorite was there was a very dead BP that was stuck in "vent" on the side of their tank, dangling limply down. The gecko tanks are never clean and most of the time there is fecal matter in all the tanks.

I won't shop there, but when my boyfriend goes to the art store for something, I usually go in to kill time. I'd never recommend the place - though I did apply for a job there, hoping I could improve the environment for the animals. I was denied due to my (non showing) tattoos, and piercings.

That is absolutely ridiculous. Both the treatment of the animals and the fact that they wouldn't hire you for such a petty reason.

I walked in to petsmart 2 days ago to buy more water bowls and i was absolutely shocked to see the same condition in my store that yours seemed to be in. The entire reptile section must have been run by someone that knew what they were doing. Or maybe a complete change in personel.

i use to work for petco there not a bad chain store but if u get somebody who doens't know about the what they are talkin about that because they just want to fit in the crowdi had to take classes to become a reptile specialist. there are associate that over populate a tank with animals but there are set limitation of how many animals are suppose to be in a enclosure. they overstock is suppose to be housed in what they call a wellness room until there is space on the sales floor but that doesnt always happens. When i got transfer to a new store they were getting veiled chameleon in and they kept dying on them and they didnt know why so i asked how are they set up and this what they told me.....
water dish, low humidity. and my response was wrong set up. chameleon need a drip system to drink, humidity needs to be at least 70%-90%. to make this already long story short after the proper set up of the enclosure we didnt have any problem housing them....

My local Petco is OK. The store is clean and well organized. All their live animals look well (birds, rodents, etc), and are in clean enough cages. Their snakes temps are a bit low, but they look good. Seems like ours knows basic husbandry or at least someone does. The only issue I have ran across is any information outside of the very basics of husbandry is lacking as well as knowing anything about the species they sell.

And one of the girls that works in that store's reptile area has plugs and visible ink so I'm calling BS on that excuse...and I live in a very religious area....

I think you should email Petco and tell em' this is one of their model stores. That way maybe they would make a lot of the other stores watch how this one does their business. Just a thought
