    Looking to buy an SLR

Starting to look at Digital SLR cameras for my wife and I to use and wanted to see if anyone here would lend me some input. I know very little about what is currently out there, but I do know about SLR type cameras. Trying to keep it at or under the $400 range, so I know I am limited there, but if you guys have any input let me know. Thanks.

yikes, not in your budget but the D3100 by Nikon is a great camera. it's sitting at $629 CAD in future shop right now, but the Nikon D3100 is the lowest model (of Nikon, which is all i'm familiar with) that i would recommend.

if you buy a lower model than that, you might end up being disappointed in the lack of features.

the D3100 has pretty much everything a new DSLR user would ever need, without breaking the bank!

then there's the older D3000, but i wouldn't recommend it as it's still $500, but it doesn't come with a focus motor built right into the body. for me, that was a major drawback because i was able to find some awesome used lenses online for EXTREMELY cheap. they were older lenses so did not have their motor built in, if my camera didn't have a built-in motor i would not have been able to use the autofocus.

hope that helps a little bit!

Thank you it does, we have birthdays coming up in September. Maybe the relatives will send some cash to help out the cause

Look on ebay for a D200 in good shape. They are often in around the 400$ range, if you buy at a reputable store they often have a warrenty. They 200 is a great 12mp camera very solid and is a semi-pro body so it is made much better then any of the current offerings under 1000$.

I have a Sony A350, and it has served me very well. I think it was about $500 with two lenses (one general purpose and one telemacro)

    NIKON!

I use the NIKON D80 and D300 and have a variety of little gizmos to go along, I swear by the Nikon product and have never had any problems to write home about. They have great customer service and a very nice aftermarket following with many quality companies that make any lens, filter or accessories that you would need.

I would save up a bit more and go for the D3100 (like some others have said). When you go with a DSLR you want to get something that is a quality product - Just remember that your camera is only as good as the equipment you put on it. Make sure that when are selecting things like UV filters, Polarizers and Lenses you get quality because a cheap lens on a good camera negates the fact that you got a good camera in the first place.

    Happy Shopping!
