    For crying out loud.

    Anybody else see this?

    http://www.kingsnake.com/blog/index.php?url=archives/465-Wisconsin-town-sneaks-through-exotics-ban-after-keeper-is-bitten.html&serendipity[csuccess]=true#feedback

It seems as if all it takes is for one careless keeper to screw it up for everyone. More of it is from a knee jerk reaction to just up and ban animals by our Government. This is really starting to get out of hand and piss me off. (sorry for my language)

It only takes one law like this pushed through- before you know it, it'll have snuck it's way into other places too. Hope the breeders will rally people to fight it, or at the very least have a Grandfather Clause.

    Re: For crying out loud.

ok well, personally i dont think it'd be smart for anyone to own anything venomous...as pets anyways, for the simple reason such as these.
if the owners of hots would be smart about their handling practices then these bites wouldn't happen at all.
(for those owners of hots here that ARE smart with their handling practices, this comment does not apply to you).
ok now before ya'll yell at me, i will add that the bans/restrictions on the NON venomous species is rediculous, well, accept for the fact that the reason the ban was put on the very large species (10+ ft.) is because people are releasing them cuz they're too big to handle or too expensive to feed.
    it's a no brainer really...
do your research people (not you bp.net peeps) and find out the adult size of the animal you wanna buy BEFORE you buy it. answer 2 very simple questions:
    1) can i afford to feed this animal throughout it's life? &
    2) can i provide the adequate housing/environment this animal will need throughout it's life?
if either of your answers to those questions is uncertainty or no then DO NOT buy that animal!
    common sense.
anyhow, sorry for having to agree with some of the points in the article.
please dont hate me for my being able to see the common sense behind these things.
it's the people that are doing stupid things that are ruining it for the rest of the reptile owning community, not the politicians imposing the bans.

The big problem there is they didn't include any kind of grandfather clause. If they aren't/don't/didn't it's a good chance when/if other states follow suit like a bunch of lemmings, they won't include it either.

This is the very reason our hobby is in trouble. The majority of us are very cautious and handle our animals with care. But, there will always be accidents, and mistakes. No matter what you cannot be 100% safe with everything.

Just because someone screwed up, the whole hobby should be banned?
And, why is it up to us to determine if someone is allowed to carry a hot? Why shouldn't it be their decision if that's what they want and are responsible about it?

I think they should be licensed to carry hots, but if that's what they want then it's their decision. If you want to take that risk, I think you should be very able to make that choice.

A portion of a statute that provides that the law is not applicable in certain circumstances due to preexisting facts.
In other words, if you already have a reptile before the ban, you can keep it.

Bingo! I think that if a person is interested in owning a hot, and they haven't before, they should offer classes and make them get a license for it.

Yeah, that's like me punishing my youngest daughter for something my oldest did, completely away from where the youngest was.

    Re: For crying out loud.

i do not by any means think it's ok for these people to banish the hobby for ALL of us because of one, or a few people's mistakes. i'm sorry i failed to clarify that.
however, i feel that if someone who owns hots gets bit by their animal due to their own stupidity and not a genuine accident, then that person should be banned from ever owning them again.
right, owning hots SHOULD be someone's choice but i agree with the licensing idea cuz you cant just approve every nick, harry & joe owning a hot just cuz they want it. there should be some kind of strict regulations and a looooong arduous painstaking process they should have to undergo.
that right there would weed out the careless people cuz they wont want to go through the whole process unless they're really serious about it.
the logic behind that is simply this,
if they have to jump through a buttload of hoops to get something they want such as a venomous snake, for example, they'll take better care of it right? cuz they'll appreciate all the hard work they had to put into getting it, hence lessening the chances of them making a stupid mistake.
