Port your number to Google Voice

Yup, they are rolling it out now. You, for $20., can port a number to GV.
This will be nice if you are getting a new phone and/or switching carriers, use your current number for GV and not worry about what new number you get.
If you are under contract still it will term your line and you will get hit with ETF's so it's not for everyone...be careful.
Too late for me really, I already have all my peeps trained on my numbers but I'm glad to see Google finally implementing this.

Every time that I've gotten a new phone/switched carriers I was able to keep the same number... I thought that was pretty common?

I do use google voice for my voicemail though, I love that I don't have to call and listen to a menu to check any messages that were left for me. Not only that, but I can archive my messages indefinitely!

It is common to port your number from one carrier to another.
Porting to GV is just another option and could come in handy for some. I actually am trying to figure out if I can use it in a few months. I have a family plan and one of the lines will be owner-less yet still under contract. I know someone who has a pay-as-you go phone and wouldn't mind adopting him on my plan. If I can port his number to GV and use the number that is under contract it will work well for everyone. The only stumbling block is how to make his non-smart non-feature phone use GV for outgoing calls and not have the other number show on caller ID. If I can find out how to do that I'm all set
