    Our Newest Additions

This Christmas a 75 gallon tank was brought to our house! And today we finally had it set up (freshwater) and introduced our first handful of fish. I'm not sure of the actual type, but I am going to find out and remember (hopefully!)

Anyways we have all the right stuff and at least two experts helping us along with the tank and we've already ordered some more fish at our fish store for next week! And even though we have some fish in mind I would love to hear suggestions for some fish for us!

If you're interested in the names we have the Dingo Brothers (Ringo, Lingo, and Bingo) who've already started their own school. Then we have King Opal, and his two female companions Waka and Waka. Then there are the three just-able-to-tell-apart fish by the names of Flametail, Soottail, and Greytail.

I'll try to get some pictures once the water clears up. So far all the fish seem healthy, are eating, and are pretty active. We hope for the best.

Fish don't get enough love over here at bp.net

I've got a breeding colony of guppies, and some day I'm going to put together a large tank and see if I can't get a couple sunfish to breed in captivity.

Good luck on your new acquisitions and trying to get photos. I can't get good photos of my guppies for the life of me.

P.S. I never name pet fish, out of a silly superstition. It seems that the fish I don't name end up living forever, and the ones I do name die mysteriously and suddenly.

How long has the tank been setup? You should never introduce fish until the tank has had a chance to properly cycle over a period of several weeks.

I let my tanks cycle for 2-5 days, but never a few weeks, that kindof absurd for a simple freshwater tank. Now if it was a saltwater or chiclid tank, than cycling would help so you can get the Alkalinity, PH, and other levels consistent.

No tank will go through a complete nitrogen cycle in 2-5 days. That's asking for sick/stressed/dead fish. I've been keeping fish for a LONG time and I have seen this mistake made WAY too often. Do as you will I suppose...

Yeah my family has had fish for at least 15 years, but to each their own. How do you expect the tank to even start a nitrogen cycle without any waste? That's why you add fish slowly over time. I've never had any fish die from being stressed, but patience is key.

    Re: Our Newest Additions

I agree. I see people often confusing letting a tank run for a few days to get pH, temperature, alkalinity, and chlorine levels straight (which for some reason they call cycling) and actual CYCLING which is a nitrogen cycle.

A nitrogen cycle takes anywhere from 4-6 weeks, sometimes more. I have only ever done fish-in cycles (using a few fish to start and complete a cycle).

I would get yourself a test kit (API makes a good one) and test your water over the course of several weeks. The first thing your going to see is a sharp rise in ammonia levels. Depending on the type of fish you have, you might lose some (or all) to high ammonia levels. You could use a bacteria supplement like API Stress Zyme to help the cycle along.

There are products you can add to the water to provide an ammonia source. Some people will use cooked shrimp (or fish food) to start the nitrogen cycle as the shrimp will begin to rot in the tank, providing a source of "fishy ammonia". This starts the cycle and once the cycle is complete you can remove the rotted shrimp and add fish slowly.

If you add a small amount of fish food or a cap full of ammonia to a cycling tank it will start the nitrogen cycle. Even if the fish don't die from using them to cycle the tank, that doesn't mean they aren't stressed or having their life span shortened. I do agree with adding fish slowely over time though to allow the beneficial bacteria to catch up to the bio load. But this should all be done AFTER the tank has properly cycled.
