It sounds like over exaggeration. The snake probably lives in a cage and they let it out on the floor while there around. People with phoebias tend to blow things out of proportion.

Yeah..I think we need more information? Just letting a snake crawl around for a few minutes is one thing, but not caring for it and letting it stay outside of it's enclosure for hours/not paying attention to where it is..that's a different story!
How much snake experience does he have? These are big animals.. Not a good 'starter' snake.. But a great snake for experienced people willing to care for them properly!
So, to the OP..
Is the snake supervised or do they just let it crawl around by itself? Do they let it out like this when one is alone, or wait til they have another set of hands(aka the roommate) to help? This statement could mean a lot of different things, some could be dangerous..some not so much!

I THINK what she's asking is whether or not the snake will attack her when it's allowed out to roam.
The answer to that is, no, probably not. Unless that snake is cornered or thinks it's threatened, odds are he'll want to stay out of your way as much as you want to stay out of his. A person is too big to be a meal for even a 20 foot snake.
