    RIP Sioux

    RIP poor Sioux.

Sioux was a mare at the stable where I board my horse. She was in her 20's but still doing great.

Well, last couple days she had colic symptoms but seemed better, so her owner left last afternoon and didn't come back to check on her.

A bad coldfront came through, with freezing rain and wind. Horses are really sensitive to that, so I made sure to give my girl extra hay and molasses water to drink.

Well, this morning poor Sioux was found lying in the freezing mud in her paddock, dead

I just hate the thought of her dying all alone in that horrid night. Made me hug my girl today and spend quality time with her. Went through 3 colics with her, spend nights out there alone. Scary stuff...

RIP Sioux, you were a great and faithful girl...

I am so sorry for your loss. It is very painful when one loses a beloved pet.

    Poor thing.

I've never had a horse of my own, but I love them a lot. I know if she were mine, better or not I'd have been there with her. You'd have had to drag me away with a towchain.

I hate the thought she must have suffered so, not knowing what to do and no one to help her.

At least she's not suffering anymore.

    Thank you !

I know the owners loved her, but I don't understand why they didn't stay...
But it was their decision to make and they are the ones that have to live with the consequences. It might have just been a fatal colic, but at least she could have had pain meds or the vet putting her to sleep, instead of the sad way she had to go.

I did the "overnight" thing 2 times at this barn. There is no-one there at night, and the barn is isolated out in the woods. It is a bit spooky at night, and also pretty cold or miserable, depending on the weather. But like you, there is no way I wouldn't have stayed. Thankfully, my mare got through her colics with meds and making sure she stayed hydrated and wouldn't roll and twist her guts..

Like you say, now Sioux is out of pain, though. Its just such a sad sight to see them drag one out of the paddock with the tractor... It looks so wrong.

Thanks for the good thoughts everyone, and I know the owner could use them as well, no matter how it went down, I do know they were quite attached to the old girl...

That is terribly sad. It's fairly uncommon for older horses to colic unless they got into something. Very sad

My girl is 22 and a few weekends ago I got a call that they couldn't find her anywhere, she's still on the family farm as I'm a college student. I expected the worst. She had fallen in the crick and swam about a mile down. They found her standing on a bank shivering uncontrollably because she was so scared. When I got to her an hour later she wouldn't even respond to me. It took her several hours to regain some of her personality. It was so scary. There are few things in my life that mean more to me than that horse!
