    The Rainbow Bridge

Many have read this touching poem during times of grief after losing a beloved pet, and other have never read it until someone sends it to them after hearing of their loss.

I've always found comfort in it. Let's use this thread to post not only "The Rainbow Bridge" but other pet memorial poems and sentiments that may bring comfort to our members when they are grieving the loss of a beloved pet. I will sticky this, so that it's easy to find.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

This is another one I find comforting.

    Tribute To A Best Friend

    Sunlight streams through window pane
unto a spot on the floor....
    then I remember,
it's where you used to lie,
but now you are no more.
Our feet walk down a hall of carpet,
    and muted echoes sound....
    then I remember,
It's where your paws would joyously abound.
A voice is heard along the road,
    and up beyond the hill,
then I remember it can't be yours....
    your golden voice is still.
But I'll take that vacant spot of floor
    and empty muted hall
and lay them with the absent voice
and unused dish along the wall.
    I'll wrap these treasured memorials
in a blanket of my love
and keep them for my best friend
    until we meet above.

    Remember Our Love

    I was chosen today
    I'm learning to fly
    The world took me away
    But please don't you cry

    And I chose you today
    to try and be strong
    So please don't you cry
and don't say that I'm gone

    When your feeling alone
    just remember our love
    I'm up near the stars
    looking down from above

    Remember our love
    in a a moment you'll see
that I"m still here beside you
    when your thinking of me

    Re: The Rainbow Bridge

Love the rainbow bridge poem. I have it framed and mounted next to a picture of my belle. I carry around some of her ashes as well inside a paw keepsake that I got at Jewelry Keepsakes. (http://www.jewelrykeepsakes.com/) Find a way to keep them with you!

The Rainbow Bridge always brings a tear. Especially after the loss. I had to euthanize one of our pet rats a few nights ago. U wouldn't think, having foodies rats, and the slitheries it would be upsetting, but she was a special little girl. After weaning, she was a weeeeee runt. All her brothers were 5x (or more) bigger than she was. We almost lost her, and had to bed her down in a washcloth with a heat lamp, give her syringes of Ensure to revive her. She lived another two years after saving her but never got very big. She would lick your hand and groom you when you pet her behind her ears.

I didn't think I'd really like a hairless dumbo, and R called her "Sausage". (My sister only had a quick glimpse once, and thought she was a baby pig). LOL I think she was a throw-back to our Peekaboo, she was so gentle. I'm going to miss our Goober.

I want to say thank you SWEETY314 for mentioning Steve Irwin. He was a great guy. Not many people remember him though, and that's a terrible shame.

    Re: The Rainbow Bridge

Why does it still hurt??? At the time they died, I was buying a house, so when Stripe and Tundra passed away, we had funerals and buried them on "our" property. Then the seller reneged and we had to move. I know life goes on but now that I'm having to move even farther away, to out of state, I wished I wasn't "leaving them behind".

It's been almost five years. I know it's silly, and we still have our other cats, and the pet rats, but my heart hurts knowing that no one is going to recognize how special that little plot of land in the backyard really is.

Rainbow bridge makes me cry everytime I read it.

Not a poem per say, but just a saying I have on a garden plaque that helped me get through an exceptionally tough loss-

If nothing ever changed there would be no butterflies.

    In Loving Memory

Don't be too harsh on me, this is a poem I actually wrote myself when I was a kid and I had to get my best friend Honey, a cockerspaniel we'd rescued ten years previous, put to sleep.

There's a wonderful place where all loving animals go
when they've gone and left and leave you alone.
It's got "Polly the Parrot," "Goldie the Fish," "Spot the Dog,"
and they all get what they wish.
It's always play time, they always have treats
and on holidays, they stuffed full with sweets.
They all get along, cats to dogs to birds
and when they get there they understand Master's words.
As time goes on and you get old,
when you join them they'll understand what they're told.
They learn extravagant tricks from friends that they saw,
so when you arrive they leave you in awe.
You see it's not just for animals, it's for all who share,
it's for all who gave tender love and care.
It's not a World Wonder, not one of the seven
and some don't believe-- it's true,
    animals do go to heaven.
