NATURAL substrate question, plus a question about behavior~

So, back in August, I bought a beautiful male Western Hoggie, my first Hognose.
His name is Atticus, by the way.
Anyway, Atticus loves burrowing, but... I just think that he would enjoy a more natural substrate better than shredded newspaper. A few days ago, I took him outside for some fresh air whilst I was doing my weekend aquarium chores, and discovered how tickled he was digging in a tub of loose, dry soil.
Do you think I could use dried, organic potting soil for his substrate? I feed him outside of the tank, so I didn't know if there would still be a chance of impaction or not.
Also, he likes to puff up and hiss at me as dramatically as possible if I try to do ANYTHING in his tank, but he's an absolute creampuff when I take him out- like a scaly sock puppet. Well, except when I take him for a soak; he tries to bite my fingers off when I'm giving him a bath, LOL.
Is this normal for a new Hog? Honestly, his aggressiveness doesn't bother me at all, but I was still curious.

They love to "show off", wait till he rolls over with his mouth open and tongue out....you will trip.

I use Sani-Chips for our Hogs...I believe its just chipped aspen.

    They love it.
