My friend wants to get an african fat tailed gecko at the next reptile show (upcoming Sunday) and I was wondering if there was anything about their care my friend should know (anything special?) and about how much a normal will cost?

Don't worry. I plan on doing some google searches but as we see all the time, some internet sources are not always reliable.

I think my normal was .. 75 dollars?, and I adopted him. A pet store had abused him, hes missing his tail I have mine in a 20 gallon, with a large water bowl. newspaper substrate and a nice sized hide.

Hes been eating VERY well. and is super healthy. just make sure you give him fresh water.
African fat tails are pretty hardy reptiles. mine was a bit defensife when i first got him, he used to hiss and nip alot. but hes gotten alot better.

You should be able to get one for a lot less than $75 at a show, probably $25.

One can thrive in a 10 gallon. UTH set to about 85, they are nocturnal. No loose substrate, Paper towel, newspaper, tile, repticarpet. Couple hides and a shallow water dish and the little guy should be set! Oh yeah, they eat crickets, mealworms, general lizard feeders.

I dont suggest repti carpet for them, when they feet there face can get stuck on the carpet..

I think Elliot means *feed*, which yes, their teeth can get stuck on the carpet.

They do need a humid hide, it helps a bunch when it comes to shedding.

Yeah, but there are some tricks to using it. I would use the back side of the carpet as well as ironing the fibers. I have since changed to tile in my female gecko tank. I'm still using paper towel for the breeder male I picked up.

Keep in mind I am referencing to leopard geckos when I talk about my collection. I chose not to get into AFT but I researched them in great detail and they are quite similar.

I love mine. I use a 20L tank for 2 adult females. For one, I'm sure a 20L would be great. A few hides(including a humid hide), newspaper or paper towel substrate, water dish, and feeders. Keep them similiar to leopard geckos, just a little more moist.

I'm always hesitant about 10g tanks only because it can be hard to heat them to have a gradient. At the shows I've been to lately, the cheapest I've seen AFT was about $40 for what looked to be WC adults. I've "heard" that WC geckos can carry parasites, but I haven't actually talked to anyone who bought WCs, so I can't verify that myself.

I'm sure he'll love it, AFT are great little geckos!

I used to keep my AFT in a 10 gallon but he just looked major squished, they get to be pretty big animals, I moved him into a 20long and he seemed a lot better off.
