    ? about Markers

I had a question for you guys out there that know what your looking for when it comes to hets. I'm looking at picking this female up to my collection. Now she is a normal but does she have any markers on her belly? The reason I ask is because I have my het pied female coming and this ones belly looks similar to the one I'm getting.

    Re: ? about Markers

The markers are taken by most to be nothing more than a myth. Enough people have seen them go both ways for me to dismiss them.

Why do you believe her to be anything special if she's sold to you as a normal? Do those from whom you're buying not know her genetics? I mean, if I was selling someone a het pied, I'd certainly want to get my money's worth.

    Re: ? about Markers

Does she exhibit the typical het markers associated with pieds...yes. Does that mean she is het pied? Not necessarily. Add her to your collection, breed her to your homozygous male and figure it out! If they are selling her as a normal, then I can't imagine you would be paying much. Breed her with a pastel or something as well so that way if you don't get any pieds you at least have a chance to get something better than a full clutch of normals.

    Re: ? about Markers

If you bought a female as a normal, and she kind of has the Het Pied markers, and you have nothing better to breed to her than a Pied male, I would say try it. If you are buying PH Pieds, I would buy the ones that had the markers.

I have four Het Pied adult females, and one double Het Pied Axanthic male, and all of them have the Het Pied markers. The double het and my biggest Het Pied female have both proven out.

    Re: ? about Markers

Well, if you have a visual piebald male, then worse comes to worse you would have normal looking babies that are 100% het piebald. However, if you breed her to both your piebald and a pastel for a multiple sire clutch, you will then have no way of knowing which are the 100% het piebalds.

As for the markers, it is never certain that it means they are het piebald. I have a normal female that has the markers, but I already know she is nothing but a normal, not that it matters to me, I still think she is pretty.

I find that a het pied "marker" for a 50% possible het shows up about 50% of the time. I find that the "het pied marker" also shows up about 50% of the time in a 100% het pied as well. I also find that from what I've seen, the het pied "marker" shows up in about 50% of normals.

    Re: ? about Markers

i have a simple rule- which works for me

buy from a trustworthly breeder who knows much about snakes and knows his collection. if he sell u a normal- it is a normal, if he sells u a het pied- it is a het pied (with or without any markers or pattern differences)
