    starving snakes bp's :(

so i go into a little pet store thats in my neighborhood to pick up some mice for my little girl and i saw they had a few bps, i walked over to take a look at them and i couldnt believe how skinny they were . they had no hides the water was dirty, their poop wasnt cleaned up and the ones that were shedding were shedding in pieces and it made me real mad that they werent taken care of and if i could i would buy them all and take care of them. i was wondering if there is anything i can do or someone i can contact to help these little poor guys out and make sure their taken care of, even if i have to go there every week and feed them myself...? thanks a lot guys

I have the same problem. The only two places in my city that sell feeder rats have horrible conditions for their reptiles, especially their snakes. When it comes down to it, I've considered applying for a job there in order to help out, but I'm not quite old enough. And I've pointed out some of the errors of their ways, but all they do is smile and say "it's alright, they don't need separate cages/a heat source/high humidity/etc."

You can try pointing it out to your specific pet store and see if they might listen, but all in all, they probably won't. You could purchase the snakes, but then the store would just stock up with more.

just another reason why i only buy from breeders. Not that you cant run into problems with breeders but at least they take proper care of the animal. Well at least most do.

i wish we could just put places like that out of business overnight or at least have them stop having snakes, they deserve it for taking care of the snakes the way they do. made me wanna punch the guy after seeing those poor snakes like that. and yeh, these snakes had sand in their enclosures too!!

Contact PETA? (No, they're crazy...) Better Business Bureau? Animal Control/Welfare? Something? Anything? Isn't there any oversight on places that sell live animals?

    Re: starving snakes bp's :(

snakes are not as hard to take care of as rodents. So if you see how great they are taking care of their snakes, why are you feeding your snakes rodents from the same place? remember what ever the rodent is feeding on, so is your snake. I seen many pet stores that feed their rodents dry dog food with dye in it. (bad for your snake) Not that all pet stores do this, but this is one of the reasons I breed my own rodents. and if I couldn't breed rodents, I would try and find a good breeder that does, and ask what they feed their rodents. most think dog food is ok and will tell you and say that their rodents do well on it. STAY AWAY
