Brock Lesnar, Shane Carwin Sign for UFC 116 Title Bout

The UFC championship fight between mega-heavyweights Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin has passed a key hurdle as both men have signed bout agreements to compete at UFC 116 on July 3 as expected.

Multiple sources have confirmed that both competitors agreed to the fight, which has been targeted by the UFC since Lesnar's health problems cleared up and Carwin won his March UFC 111 bout against Frank Mir in short order. The fight should be officially announced sometime within the next two weeks, a source told MMA Fighting.

Lesnar and Carwin were slated to face off both at UFC 106 and UFC 108 but ultimately both matchups were canceled due to Lesnar's then-unknown illness, which turned out to be diverticulitis. Lesnar eventually lost around 40 pounds while suffering through it, but after minor surgery and rest, Lesnar announced in January that he'd been medically cleared by doctors to resume training and fighting.

Carwin, meanwhile, sat out over a year while possible fights fell through, but he returned with fire, knocking out the former champ Mir in just 3:48. Amazingly, it marked the 12th straight time that Carwin earned a first-round finish as he improved to a perfect 12-0.

UFC 116 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

If Carwin wins, there's always going to be the question of what would have happened if they could have fought before Lesnar's illness.

It sucks, but that's just the way things are. I do think that Carwin is going to win this one, but I also think we're going to see a mere shadow of Lesnar's physical prowess.
