    snake food!

Thought I would snap some pics of the snake food instead of snakes for a change. I have a nice sized colony of ASF rats. I have three breeder bins with two females and one male per bin. Then I have two separate grow-up bins for males and females. We have produced 100+ animals with new batches of pinks every day. I have even produced albinos from a few groups.

this little guy wouldn't sit still for a pic away from mom

Nice focus on the head of a breeder female

    male grow-up bin

    female grow-up bin

and the albino's in the shots.

    close up on the eyes.

    Thanks for looking!

    Re: snake food!

So do the males ever fight and kill each other? I have never raised snake food though it would save me hundreds, I couldn't put in all the time and effort to raise them. It would take away from the time I spend taking care of the actual snakes lol. But when I worked at a pet store we raised a ton of rats and mice, and it was messy work. But I've heard ASFs are easier and less smelly. But are they territorial like regular rats?

    Re: snake food!

Drew87, I started breeding the AFs's because I had a snake that was sick and would not eat unless tube fed. We bought a ASF, and took it right away. We decided to breed ASF's because they don't stink so bad and they have more nutrients and less fat than the norway's you buy at the store.

joepythons, yes they are, the fuzzies before they have thier eyes open look like panda bears.

Jenn, pretty sure he got eaten by the pinstripe a few minutes after that shot

Oroborous, I have never had any territorial issues with any of my AFS's. the grow-up's accept any weaned babies I introduce to them without a problem. The only fatalities I have had were from babies to babies. I waited too long to wean the first batch with a batch of pinks in the same bin. The older babies were laying on the pinks when mom was nursing and the pinks diddnt get fed and died.

    Thanks for all the comments!

I feed off my ASFs when I moved to the new place... I miss them . Sometimes I would spend more time with them than with my snakes Lol.

yeah, I have been spending more time w/ them now that its breeding time, one of my females have locked up and one is unsure and besides that I have no idea. but its fun to watch the baby hoppers chase each other and popcorn all across the bin. Its also fun to throw crickets in the bins and watch all the rats run around and get some exercise and vitamins and minerals!

    Re: snake food!

Aww well those first two are too cute!! ... when I only had one snake I used to ask for the ugliest plain white one...they thought I was nuts. I don't do that anymore but it still makes me feel bad when I feed them the cute ones
