    Duped?

So this is my two year old western hoggie. 'She' was sold to me as a female, but based on what I've read/seen pictures of, I've recently been having doubts. 'Her' tail seems more on the thin/long side than the short/stubby side, but I don't have much to compare it with.
Last month 'she' weighed in at just over 200g, and eats one 2wk old rat per week.
Although I don't care about breeding her, I wanted a nice big thick Hoggie!

Here's some pictures that might help. If your opinions are indecisive, then I'll find somewhere to get 'her' prefessionally sexed.

    Thanks for your advice!

Looks to be a male. I have a baby male and it's clearly easy to tell it's a male because his tail is very long and tapered. I think you should get your Hog probed or (if large enough) popped to be able to be sure.

Colubrids are often mis-sexed because they're easy to pop as babies, but if for some reason the hemi-penes don't show up, then they are labeled as 'female' even though they could still be male.

    Re: Duped?

*sigh* That's fairly disappointing, especially since I've been refering to it as a she for a year and a half now. I wanted a big Hog! Ah well, hoggies are still awesomesause. Hopefully 'he' still has alot of growing left to do!

Thank you all for your opinions and honesty!

FYI: It's very hard to sex that animal from the pictures. Hognose are easy to sex if you have another to compare it to but trying to guess with just pictures is very hard.

Males will have a very looong tail compared to females.

    Re: Duped?

hrm, maybe my chances arn't so bleak, I measured 'her' today, and she was 26 inches. Has anyone else experiences males this long?

At least if Loki is male she's a big one!

Edit-With the ambiguity I'm going to try and get her into a reliable vet to get her probbed if I can. Reliable reptiles vets are hard to find in Canada though. Luckily I heard there's a decent one near my University.

I have a 7+ year old male that is pushing 150 grams. I don't measure any of my snakes, I just go by weights so I can't help you on the length part.

He eats every 1-2 weeks and has been on that feeding schedule for over 4 or 5 years. He just eats when he feels like it.

I also have small females (around 200+ grams) that eat all the time but just don't get any larger.

I think some local hogs just stay smaller so it's hard to sex by size.

Good luck finding a good vet.
