2 Different Litters Question
I have a 1.2 group of ASF rats in a tub. One of the moms had a litter several weeks ago, and the babies eyes are now open, but i don't believe they are ready to wean off yet. My other mom dropped a litter last night, and all of the babies are under a hide and mixed together. I haven't watched them long, but it appears that the newborns are not going to be able to get to the mom for milk because of the larger babies pushing them out of the way. I've got the room, so should i separate the first mom and her babies for a week or so until they are ready to wean?
Thanks for any help.

I would seperate them. In my experiance with normal rats not ASF pinkys don't usualy make it if they are in a pile with almost weaned.

I went ahead and separated them. I already saw blood where one of the moms already killed atleast one of the new pinks, and she's acting kind of strange around the rest of her litter. I hope they'll make it. These things are so aggravating to raise.

Re: 2 Different Litters Question
I have a few breeding colonies. What I do is remove the male as soon as they start dropping babies. This reduces fatalities in the babies quite a bit. I keep all babies together until they are way ready to wean, then I take the older ones out. When all litters have been weaned I see what females can be reintroduced to a male. Some will take another one, some wont. I am pretty new to this too, but this method has worked for about 4 months now.

better be careful...asf are extremely territorial especially once they have mated. Reintroducing a male could be bad.

I took the mom with the almost weaner size litter out. I plan on putting her back with the other two in about a week or so. Do you think I'll have a problem with reintroducing her to the group?

time will tell...
some have no problems...
others the colony will attack her as a whole.
ASF are some of the most brutal of the rodents I have dealt with.

Re: 2 Different Litters Question
When I introduce a male, it is with complete supervision. You will know right away if they will be accepted. Then the decision is, is it one female that can be removed? Or do you need to remove the male. I find that if you give the male an enclosure, then reintroduce females in the new enclosure it works better, but not always. But then I have about a billion tanks, LOL
