I dont understand your heating question. You get higher readings than what your ranco is set to? that doesnt make sence, It should be the other way around. I dont know if this is the the problem, but remember you CANT use a temp gun in a reflective surface, use it on the substrate in the hot end.

Those are actualy 28qts sterilite from target, the only tubs I use at the moment. When the females get big I will get 41qts, which are the same dimensions as the 28qt but longer.

Oh i know, I actually remove the lid and check the tub (i have newspaper substrate) on all spots that i can. I just adjusted the thermostat and fixed where the probe was on the heating pad. We will see the results in a little while.

Something to check, which might explain the fluctuations, is the differential setting. Make sure it is at 0 or 1. The differential number is the number of degrees that the t-stat will fluctuate above and below the setting. So if it is set at 92 and the differential is set at 4, then your t-stat will heat up to 96, shut-off, and come back on again at 88.
Also you might want to double check and make sure it is set to H1, which is the "heat" setting. If not, then the t-stat thinks it is hooked up to an a/c and will continue to run trying to cool the temp down to the setting, and will actually end up overheating the tank... Hope this helps

You can "search" for the ranco settings in the forums, here is what mine are set to:

H1

Just make sure the probe is flat on the flexwatt with no space in between them and that the probe doesnt move around.
