HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
I am freaking out. One of my babies is hatching with a knot in its umbilicus. I need advice on what to do. It has a knot at the base of the yolk sac, and I am in need of some advice. I can't get it untied!!!!!!
-
Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Sorry to hear that. Good luck with the hatchling. Wish I had some words of advice, but I have never had that happen.

Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Heather you can do this...
inspect to see if the knot is part of the cord or a fatty deposit.
-
Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Keep everything moist & see if you've a herp vet near you. If not, let me know about the fat, I can walk you trough a few things if you don't have a herp vet to help you out. But that's going to be a big undertaking, hon. Keep your cool & keep everything moist.

Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Most of the knot is yolk... but it is around the umblicius

Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Heather,
If you can't untangle it, I would tie it off above the cut near the belly with a piece of unwaxed dental floss. Then cut it about half an inch from the tie off. Bruce Whitehead had a similar thing happen. See this thread:
http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ight=umbilicus
Of course the other option is to find a herp vet if you don't feel comfortable with it.

I had a baby hatch out like this a month ago... I had to cut the cord... Tie it off with thread and then take the yellow yolk of a chicken egg that is room temp and mix it up good. Then take one of those baby syringe that have no needle point and "pump" the babies stomach with the yolk. I had to do this a few times until she took pinky rats on her own.
He/she will be ok...

I don't believe his cutting of the umbilicus was the cause of the death. Looks like other contributing circumstances.
-
Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
When I say pump... I mean down it's throat. Not through its cord... Just to clarify..
-
Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Oh no! I hope it turns out alright. :(

This is what I would do. I have had to do it twice this year, and had great success with this. However, it is paramount to get a meal in them within 10 days, and continue to assist feed until they eat on their own. I wish you the best of luck Heather. I would hate to see you lose that beautiful baby.

Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
thats one hot snake i hope it works out good

Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
I would give it a little time to see if it absorbs any of the yolk itself. It is possible that it may still be able to absorb some of that yolk even though it is knotted. If nothing looked different by the end of the day I would probably tie it off and snip it.

Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
I needed some extra coaching, but here is the end result.
Of course this has to happen while I am going off to vacation... Of course. But I will have updates every day from the Joel, and I will be back on Sunday.

I would have, but I am leaving in a few hours to go on vacation. This was do or die...
Of course...
I swear, I'm going to have a heart attack after this.
Grew a whole mess of grey hairs...
Note to everyone: Snakes do this on PURPOSE...

Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Heather I think you did a great job on the little one. Please keep us uptodate on how it goes.
-
Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Good luck with him. He looks to have pretty good size to him so hopefully he has enough yolk absorbed to make it until the fist meal.

Gald to hear it has penes. I am submitting your name to UC for an honorary doctorate. It looks like a surgeon took care of that snake. He'll be fine, I just know it. At minimum we know he is in good hands.
-
Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Great job with the 'surgery'...lol. Looks like a pro did it. He looks like a healthy lil guy. He's also GORGEOUS. Good luck!

I'm so sorry! I sure hope the little guy makes it!!
-
Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Great job Heather.....hope he does well. He looks pretty good post surgery :)
-
Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
He'll be fine! We hatched out a little 34 gram albino het girl who was quite weak just out of the egg. She didn't look like she'd got much of the yolk at all! But we set her up just like the rest--within 24 hours she was stronger. She shed out normally on schedule, and she just took her first meal of a live mouse fuzzy without a fuss, all on her own, yesterday. :) We didn't need to assist-feed or anything.

Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
he should be good....he's got decent size just keep him moist and everything claen to avoid any type of infection...good luck:gj:

Re: HELP!!! Knotted its own umbilicus!!!
Hi,
What happens when the umbilicus heals?
Does it dry up and fall off with the dental floss attatched or is some of it drawn inside?
If it is drawn inside what do you do about the dental floss?
I feel like I should know the answers to this but I really don't.

Like it happens in nature, it dries up and falls off. I was told that there was a very small portion of flesh with dental floss tied around it left at the base of the tub before it got cleaned.
So it doesn't get absorbed, persay. That would only be if the floss was in the yolk itself.. I can't imagine any reason for that to be.
:)
