That kinda sounds like he’s always thirsty maybe even partially dehydrated ?!?

I have never witnessed a snake drinking like that in all my years .

Just clarify ... there is ALWAYS a bowl of reasonably fresh water in his viv - at all times ... isn’t there ?

Not sure if this is what op means but my snake pretty much always drinks after I handle her and then put her back. There's a bowl of water in her viv at all times. But pretty much without fail if I've handled her she meanders around a little and then takes a drink after I put her back. I think she's just using the excuse to grab a drink before she goes back to hide. Maybe it's the same?

My Ana Gwyn will drink water while I'm holding her, almost every time I offer it. She's always got fresh water in her tub, in fact I use a plastic dog dish and it doubles as her favorite hide. She drinks while she's in there, but she'll also drink while I'm holding her without hesitation.

I figure it's a case of "snakes are weird."

Certainly sounds like it .. I know of some who love absolutely fresh water but I’ve seen many reports of people who have NEVER seen any of their snakes drink ever ..
